Oswald Chambers is most notably remembered by the most widely used Christian daily devotional “My Utmost for His Highest.” He was born on July 24, 1874 in Aberdeen, Scotland. The devotional was actually put together by his wife Gertrude after his death, November 15 1917, from complications of an appendectomy.
At age 15 he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined his church’s evangelistic ministry in London. In 1897 he enrolled in Dunoon College and in 1901 began teaching and preaching in England, Scotland, Ireland, the United States and Japan. In 1911 he founded The Bible Training College in London. His first book “Biblical Psychology” was published in Cincinnati, Ohio.
On May 25, 1910 he married Gertrude (Biddy) Hobbs. On May 24, 1913 their only child Kathleen was born. In 1915 he responded to a call he sensed from God to move his family to Egypt during World War I to minister to the soldiers as a YMCA chaplain. In 1927 his wife Biddy compiled his notes into the daily devotional so loved even today and it was published in Britain. It would be published in America in 1934.
The devotional for today, April 22, in “My Utmost for His Highest” is published in this audio clip:
