The Me I Couldn’t Be

I’ve learned some things about music;
and of stars and galaxies;
studied history and politics;
walked the land, and stroked the sea.

I’ve planted gardens of vegetables
with tubers, lentils and greens;
tomato vines, cucumbers and grapes;
and statuesque poles of beans.

I’ve adored God’s creatures of
leather, fur, feather and fin:
Ones that were faithful long past the grave
and the wild which will never be penned.

But when it comes to humans,
they are hard to understand.
There are mysteries and delicate matters
between a woman and man.

And then untaken photographs
of places I’ll never see.
I’m bound through the loss of children
and the me I couldn’t be.
